This.I have no idea what these two were up to, but I was walking into the kitchen with camera in hand to  put the battery in the charger, and this is what I saw.Charlene looks a tad guilty. And I know that often we project human emotions onto our cats, but I do believe cats are capable of feeling guilt.Or is she angry? Angry at me for seeing this moment, for laughing at them, or taking a picture? Or angry at Wylla because she encroaching on her space? The chair is right next to a furnace vent, so this spot is coveted on cold days.Who knows for sure what's happening here, but I'm grateful…

I know you all know this, and I'm preaching to the choir here, but before you try this game at home, please remember that string can be a hazard to cats. Never let your kitty ingest string - it can cause major issues and is potentially fatal. So, if you use string as a cat toy, never let go of the other end, and when you're done playing, put the string somewhere safe and out of paw's reach. With that said, Wylla and Charlene think string is really fun. And those lightning fast paws are pretty cute.

Charlene was do for a round of vaccines and her annual physical, so I took her into the vet last week. We decided to do a "geriatric" blood panel to see how things look. It's shocking to think she's entered that stage of life, but Bean turns nine in just a couple of weeks. All is well with Charlene. She's lost a few ounces since her last visit, her teeth are excellent, and the blood work results all looked great! We're so glad she's doing so well. Let's hope that all continues for many years to come!

Wylla Stout weighs seven pounds!!!!SEVEN POUNDS!And this makes us very happy! This time last year, she had just hit five pounds, so she really has made great progress in the past 12 months. You can definitely feel the difference when you give her a hug. There's more girth, for sure.Onward and upward, not-so-wee Wylla!

  • Skittles and Skitzo [3] - February 28, 2015

    27 Feb 2015 | 9:00 pm
Skittles and Skitzo [3]Kristen says: Last Easter, the family cat, Mischief, passed away at the age of 16, and we still miss her very much. After her passing, nothing felt right in the Birdsey household. I spent the next month or so searching cat shelters hoping to adopt a kitten, and after two failed adoptions, I discovered a family of kittens on Petfinder. Two little gray-and-black kittens caught my eye. It didn't take much to convince my parents that we shouldn't separate them and instead try to adopt both of them. So we called the shelter and found out they had been separated to two…

Benny [3]Michelle says: Benny was born to a cat who was "indoor only." Benny's mom's owner, thinking that her cat never went outside, said she "did not bother" to spend the money on getting her spayed; she felt it was expensive and uneccessary. However, when Benny's mom went into heat, she squeezed past her owner at the door to get outside and got pregnant! Her owner didn't realize anything was up until she gave birth. The owner's brother worked at a pet store and contacted our rescue to help them with their kitty situation. Our rescue agreed to help her rehome the kittens if she agreed to…

Cinderella [3]Michelle says: Cinderella was a foster kitten that needed some bottle feeding but mostly just help with eating on her own and using a litter box. Cindy was a character -- she loved other cats! Very few foster kitties make friends with our cats; our cats are used to kittens coming in, annoying them for a while, and leaving. *laugh* As our cats get older, they get less patient and want less to do with the kittens. However, Cindy won over everyone! I would catch her cuddling up with just about all of our adult cats, and all of them would cuddle/groom and snuggle with her. It was…

When we saw the kittens from a distance they were all black and white. I did not want another black-and-white cat -- in honour of Blackie -- but we got to the cage and there in the corner was this little ball of grey fluff. They asked if I wanted to hold her and that was it. I was smitten. Holly's mother had died when she was two weeks and she was bottle-raised by a loving ten-year-old…

Pineapples are the quintessential tropical fruit. They’re so versatile and so delicious, but how much do you really know about them? Which of these things is not like the other… “pineapple” is called something like “ananas” in almost every language except for English. Apparently, English settlers thought they looked like pinecones when they first encountered them. That makes a little bit of sense, I guess. Pineapples take around three years to mature completely. And once you pick one, it will not continue to ripen the way other fruits do. So you should…

  • Taffy vs. toffee

    claire
    16 Feb 2015 | 3:05 pm
What exactly is the difference between taffy and toffee? The names sound alike and are spelled alike, but the two confections are wildly different. Taffy is made out of something sweet, something greasy, and something pretty. So, basically, you boil sugar and mix it with butter and food coloring (and maybe another flavor, too). Nowadays it’s a lot of corn syrup and glycerine. Then you stretch it out a bunch of times to give it that light, airy texture. Salt water taffy is a version of this candy that originated in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and is now famous all along the Eastern…
